Jill Filipovic and the Googlebomb

Once upon a time there was a woman called Jill Filipovic, a young American law student and feminist blogger.

Jill Filipovic was beginning to make her name as a writer and blogger at Feministe when she came to the notice of a Neanderthal gaggle of male fellow-students.

The sad story of what then happened to Jill Filipovic is told here at Larvatus Prodeo by Tigtog, along with the much happier story of how the name Jill Filipovic, when Googled, began to turn up accurate and respectable results instead of the swampoid sleaze that said Neanderthals had been posting and linking about Jill Filipovic and others.

And for those not yet acquainted with the concept of the Googlebomb, Tigtog's post will explain why I have repeated Jill Filipovic's name umpty squillion times in the last four paragraphs.

Feel free to join in.

David Jackmanson, bless him, in comments on LP has made it easy to add it to blogs if anyone wants to do so.

Speaking of Jill Filipovic's fellow students, why are some people such ratbags? Do they think it will get them further in the rat race?

I doubt it, Mindy. I've never got very far asking men 'Why?' about anything to do with sex. Especially not young men.

And when you do get an answer, it's often something you don't want to hear, like 'Because I can.'

In this particular case I assume that consciously they think it's a compliment and unconsciously they want to put her down because she is a double threat: an intellectual equal (heh -- you know what I mean) AND someone to whom they are vulnerable because they find her 'attractive'. That's something that a certain sort of man can't tolerate.

Plus, of course, women are objects and commodities that require to be given points out of ten, as everyone knows.

Thanks for joining in, Pav. You too, Mindy.

It's been an interesting few weeks charting the progress of this.

That kind of thing is disgusting. You should see some of the comments that have been posted on Ms Fits latest comment stream for Friday Q & A #63...

I despair, I truly do.

Oh dear God in heaven shoot me now. Audrey, that was cruel.

*Takes deep breath*

But I suppose it's important to know they're out there.

*Stiffens upper lip* (God, even that sounds dirty.)

Actually, no shooting for the moment. A stiff nail brush, a litre of Dettol and six months of therapy should do it.

To any of the nice men who drop by here from time to time, follow Audrey's link and check out that thread, just so you know exactly what women are on about when we get a bit negative about blokes. We don't mean you.

Thank you so much! I can't tell you how much I appreciate all the bloggers doing this. You all are fantastic. This restores my faith in progressive communities, and makes me feel especially lucky to be a part of the feminist blogosphere. Thank you.

Well there you go: yet more evidence of the power of Teh Interwebs to correct the evil influence of...um...Teh Interwebs.

I must say, though, that Ms. Filipovic is really rather hot. For a feminist, I mean. As a normal woman she'd rate about 8.1 out of 10.

See? Even the nice ones can't help themselves.

Good point, though I think it's more the power of feminist solidarity myself. Teh Interwebs, like so many other things, are merely the vector for the transmission of Good and Evil.

Aw, feckit. I was afraid you'd already cursed me with the epithet of "nice", and there's the pudding of it. Curse your Witchy Weirding Ways, Dr Pavlova.

Everybody knows nice boys don't get the hot chicks. I'll have to resort to more extreme measures - maybe oppose late-term abortions for lesbian islamist strawmice or somesuch.

Mmh, not "vector" for mine, more amplifier. The ubiquity of Teh Interwebs has simply provided latent bullies with a virtual bullhorn. Likewise, Teh Feminazi Global Conspiracy of Man-Hatin' Doom is technologically assisted in its nefarious networking.

Boys, sexism is bad. Don't do it.

Also: teenage suicide - don't do that either.

Heh heh heh.

*Beckons to feline familiars and instructs them to put the kettle on*

If you can find any heavily pregnant lesbian Islamist strawmice then I think you should by all means oppose their abortions, otherwise we'll have a lot of tax-eating baby lesbian Islamist strawmice to support.

Re bullhorn -- I'd disagree, to some extent at least. I think Teh Interwebs do actually change what people say -- simply by providing a different and interactive forum for saying it -- and elicit (or, if you prefer, 'suck') remarks out of people who might otherwise remain what would in many cases be blessedly silent. To that extent, blogging is indeed Teh Bad.

Excuse me now while I park my broomstick, and the cats and I drink our wartwort tea. Yum.

Sorry, that made absolutely no sense whatsoever. I meant 'by no means'.

Witches are irrational. It's in the job description.

Nah. Nah. You see, this is where your fiendish conspiracy is so damned cunning. What else to feed the feline feministas' murderous bloodlust?

This suggests that you think the presence of a medium like the Internet encourages nasty people in their nastyness, nastyness that would otherwise remain silent. I'm sorry to disillusion you further, oh Bewitching Consort of Satan, but there is nothing particularly out of the ordinary with the actual CONTENT of the commentary on Ms Filipovic.

Stuff like that is said by men all the time, with varying degrees of villainy. I disagree that Teh Interwebs change the way people speak - men have conversations like these IRL. The Web simply facilitates this activity on a potentially epic scale - a giant locker-room, if you like [though prolly not] - hence my opinion of it as an amplifying technological medium that empowers dickheads and divas both.

Your blog post is now the number one search result for Jill's name.

I came across it after reading her defense of Sonia Sotomayor and, as I always do with writers who I find well-reasoned or ridiculous, (in this case the latter) I Googled her name to find out who she was.

I think there's a bit of a double standard here. We're expected to to only see Series Law School Jill, but the stuff she's contributed to the internet -- her own content -- looks like the kind of trail of stupidity left by a suicidegirl.

We've got her flickr page, chock full of party photos and pictures of Jill posing in MySpace angles, and her Feministe profile, which is really just a self-fellating paragraph under another MySpace angle photo.

Worse, she links to her Amazon "wishlist" which is exactly the sort of thing Youtube attention whores and suicidegirls do when they want men on the internet to buy them presents.

I'm sorry, am I supposed to take this woman seriously? On the one hand she's Serious Law School Jill, who has been victimized by men writing nasty stuff about her on the internet. And that's not cool. But on the other hand, it seems she's using her looks to get more pageviews and entice people into giving her free shit.

You can go one way or another, but not both, and this is why I don't take her seriously. Particularly because here she is on AlterNet, writing a defense of Sonia Sotomayo and insisting the only people who have a problem with her nomination are "white and male."

Is this what passes for intelligence these days?
