Elective affinities

Can anyone explain to me what it is about a clean pale-yellow bedsheet that brings a mostly black, semi-longhaired cat all the way from the other end of the house specifically in order to lie down on it?

All hypotheses thoughtfully considered.

Just good colour sense I suppose - a sense of what suits one best.

or a spiteful sense of humour.

Badness.

I've heard that they like contrasting colours, thus the affinity of black cats with white pants (for anyone silly enough to wear them) ditto for white cats and black pants. Personally I think it's sheer bloody mindedness.

Or the cat mistook it for a patch of sunshine.

All of these are good working hypotheses, but I think famed cat proprietor Lucy Tartan has come closest to the heart of the matter.

It's so you'll know where the middle is.

My cats will often show me where the middle of a piece of fabric is whenever I want to sew something.

So kind of them really.

They do it because they CAN! They'll sit on the newspaper you are reading, curl up in a basket of freshly washed clothes, lay on your bed so you have about 3 inches left to lay down before falling off the bed - they do it to piss us off & remind us of their existence.

We recently adopted a 'keeping work clothes fur-free' survival strategy. This entails only putting on our work clothes at precisely the last minute before heading out the door.

The cat, however, will not be frustrated in his attempts to coat us in his coat and only seeks to rub himself against us when we have dressed.

The silver part of his coat sticks to the dark trousers and the black part of his coat to the white shirt.

Typically for cats, very effective.
