What book is that?

Does anybody recognise this book?

"And a recollection of trying to recall, in other years, a book I read as a child: somewhere, a warm kitchen scene where spices were special and rare, and had to be used carefully because the spice seller wouldn’t be coming to the house for another year. I can’t remember any more than this (how can I possibly hope to recover this book when this is all I can remember of it?), but the kitchen had something of the quality of Marmaduke Scarlett’s kitchen in The Little White Horse. I guess it's too much to hope this rings a bell with anyone?"

If it does, do be a petal and click over to Stephanie's, and tell her what it is. If it doesn't, go and have a read of her lovely posts about music, spice and summer anyway.

I don't know the book but the post brought back a memory for me. I remember having a book about a rabbit called Pookie, a flying rabbit. I can't remember what happened to it but years later I saw it in a bookshop and the whole story came back to me. I bought it and its companions and still have them. It had a happy ending and I did't sob like I did every time I had to read 'The Velveteen Rabbit'. Sorry to be so off topic but memories you know.

I remember the Pookie books. The one with Jack Frost in it freaked me out big-time.

I loved Pookie as a kid, though I would have killed Belinda the woodchooper's daughter. & Pookie was a bit of twot really. But the thing I remember most clearly is how frequently they were cross or unhappy. I suspect Terry Pratchett read them too much as a child.
