It's always nice to see the meeja getting its priorities right

'Little Steve Irwin' cries for stolen lizard

A seven-year-old Port Melbourne boy is still in tears today after a burglar stole his pet blue tongue lizard yesterday.

The lizard, named Harry, was taken from a fish tank in Ethan Payne's bedroom. A rare violin, made in 1764, was also stolen during the burglary.

Cop that for the headline quadrella: Steve Irwin, children, animals, and a rilly rilly mean burglar. (240-year-old violin? What 240-year-old violin?)

Apparently Rupert hasn't got a monopoly on this kind of thing, because the article is from here.

  1. Oh my goodness. As much as I love native fauna, I'm fairly sure there's a blue-tongue in my backyard somewhere, but there isn't a 240-year-old violin lying about. *Deep and despairing sigh*

  2. Somewhere in Melbourne tonight, a sad and lonely blue-tongue is playing a sorrowful solo song on a 240-year-old violin ...

(Cue the key of A minor) ...

  3. Or the police are failing to notice a man carrying a small guitar with something squirming in his pocket

  4. Which reminds me of the time I was temporarily looking after a piccolo cello after it got repaired. And I casually asked the repairer what it was worth....
I was very glad to hand that particular item over to its rightful owner. Although there was this brief moment of temptation to flog it on e-bay.

  5. "Is that a blue tongue in your pocket, or are you just pleased to see me." - a line that has all sorts of disturbing implications ...

A piccollo cello ... I must admit, despite my musical training, I'm not sure what that is. It sounds like a musical instrument that can't decide. A Beffudlichord ...

Also, Lucy Sussex, hi! We keep on running into each other in weird places - comedy festival, Chinese restaurants, SciFi conventions ...
