Thalassametry *

* I made this word up.

It wasn't until I was typing this out for a post to a Larvatus Prodeo literature thread that I remembered -- no, realised -- what a stupendous poem Wallace Stevens' 'The Idea of Order at Key West' really is. So here's the favourite bit again, just for no reason at all.


... tell me, if you know,
Why, when the singing ended and we turned
Toward the town, tell why the glassy lights,
The lights in the fishing boats at anchor there,
As the night descended, tilting in the air,
Mastered the night and portioned out the sea,
Fixing emblazoned zones and fiery poles,
Arranging, deepening, enchanting light.
