To ruche or not to ruche

A comments thread developing (being spun?) on the previous post includes the question 'What is ruching?' Ruching (right) is an allegedly decorative effect created in fabric by making gathers in it. It is the coarse cousin of smocking (below), which is cool where ruching is naff. Don't ask me why; it's just one of those things.

See?

  1. Ruching ain't all bad. I have an appointment with an eighties frock and some serious ruching tomorrow, for my 19 year old opshopper. She thinks I can fix anything - hopefully this time she will be right.

  2. I gave this issue a lot of thought at the time and concluded that it's all contextual. Good luck with the opshop dress. And yay to the 19-y-o for having some style-imagination and not just being an orthodox fashion slave.
