Oxymoron of the week

"Choc Chip Hot Cross Buns"

  1. No worse, surely, than the fairly ubiquitous 'tandoori chicken pizza'

  2. Indeed. Very much the same sort of thing.

  3. There must be a database for this sort of thing. A pizza shop in Raymond Terrace, outside of Newcastle, once sold spaghetti bolognaise pizza.

  4. Anon, I take it you mean you like choc chip hot cross buns, and I'm sure they are indeed very nice, but my point was that if they are choc chip then they are not, by definition, hot cross buns as we know them.

As far as I'm concerned, a bona fide hot cross bun is a bun with spices, fruit, peel, and crosses made out of icing.

  5. I did a post last year about the apparently 'fruitless' hot cross buns for sale at my local supermarket. I like the 'fruitful' (including peel) variety myself.

  6. No fruit, no spices, no icing. Sweet glazing and cross made of dough like the bun. OR ELSE.

  7. Zarquon, I note you take no position on choc chips, but I'm guessing you don't approve of them either.

Lovely bit of Friday cat blogging for your maiden post!

  8. Yes I noticed that too Pav. Zarquon is clearly a person who grasps the inner meaning of the universe.

  9. I got hate mail about my description of Ouyen in a blog post, but it's simply a fact that the caff there sells a 'plain' pizza topped with tomato sauce, cheese, and ham.

  10. What I'm hanging out for are salt and vinegar or chicken communion wafers on Sunday mornings.

  11. " ...they are not, by definition..."

I daresay you're one of those purists who insist that if it's got more than tomato paste and anchovies on it then it isn't pizza?

  12. anonymous: yes. And even the anchovies are dubious.

And can I just repeat: pineapple is a fruit delicious eaten fresh (chunks or slices I'm not fussed). Once heated it is inedible. If battered, it can be used as something, I'm sure, but that something is not food. All said in a grumpy, uptight way.

  13. My nephew loves nachos pizzas with sour cream. It's like eating corn cardboard.

  14. ...mmm...nachos pizza with sour cream...mmm
